How to use essential oils for weight loss

Essential oils are quickly becoming a household staple in many homes. Essential oils may be able to help you lose a few extra pounds if you’re trying to lose weight.

The oils will not help you burn calories. They can, however, boost your metabolism, aid digestion, combat sugar cravings, and much more.

How to use essential oils for weight loss

There are two ways in which you can use essential oils for weight loss:

  • Diffuse the essential oils in your home.
  • Make a blend and massage it into your body on the abdomen area.

Is recommended the blend and massage method because you’ll get more of the essential oils into your blood stream and working in your body. Diffusing oils into the air is a nice background touch and works for mental balancing and emotional support. But if you’re looking for support to physical ailments from essential oils, you want to get as much of them into your system. Our skin is our largest organ. Via the skin, we are able to absorb the multitude of benefits that essential oils hold.

Essential oils can support your weight loss plan. Although they don’t directly burn calories for you, essential oils can add some complementary benefits to your day.

Some oils may help:

  • Boost the metabolism
  • Help drain fluid retention
  • Nip feelings of “the munchies”
  • Improve digestion
  • Energize your workout
  • Uplift the spirits
  • Relieve tension and stress
  • Ease aches and pains in the body
  • Correct stretch marks or cellulite

Weight loss is almost always combined with healthy lifestyle choices, possible changes in diet, and changes in emotional eating behavior.

The idea of supporting yourself with essential oils is that if you’re feeling mentally and physically well, you’re more likely to stick to your plan of losing weight.

1. GRAPEFRUIT

Grapefruit oil supports your metabolism

When it comes to losing a pound or two, one of the first things you should do is make sure your metabolism is working properly. That is exactly what grapefruit essential oil does! It is a tangy yet sweet citrus oil with a fresh scent and energizing energy. It boosts your body’s metabolism, which aids in the removal of fat. Whether you’re on a toning or weight-loss program, grapefruit essential oil should be the first oil you reach for.

Not only does Grapefruit boost the metabolism, it also aids in promoting mental balance and encouraging a joyful mood. Both are feelings that I’m certain you’d like to have while working towards losing some weight.

2. FENNEL

Fennel essential oil aids with fluid retention

Sweet Fennel essential oil (Foeniculum vulgare var. dulce) is a diuretic, meaning it causes increased passing of urine.

It detoxifies the body and helps with fluid retention, heavy legs, cellulite, flatulence, and constipation. It promotes overall improved digestive health. Fennel has a licorice-like aroma. If you dislike licorice, use it sparingly or combine it with other oils. This allows you to reap the benefits without inhaling too much of the aroma.

Avoid Sweet Fennel essential oil during pregnancy and while breast-feeding.

3. JUNIPER BERRY

Juniper berry essential oil has detoxifying effects

Juniper Berry (Juniperus communis) is an incredible natural purifier. In aromatherapy, its properties are known as depurative, meaning it’s an herb considered to have purifying and detoxifying effects.

Detoxification aids in fluid retention, abdominal bloating, and cellulite reduction. Not only that, but Juniper Berry is also nervine, which means it is used to relax the nerves. As a result, it reduces mental tension and anxiety, which aids in a healthy approach to weight loss.

Its sweet and grassy scent blends beautifully with grapefruit oil’s citrus notes. Juniper Berry is always included in my weight loss essential oil blend.

A word of caution: please also avoid Juniper Berry during pregnancy, and if you have kidney disorders.

4. LEMON

Use Lemon oil to help fight food cravings

If you’re looking for a weight loss essential oil, look no further than Lemon essential oil (Citrus limon). It is one of those oils that you should not keep in your oil cabinet for too long, so use it liberally! It belongs to the citrus family of oils, which are all top notes, meaning they evaporate faster than middle or base notes. When an essential oil bottle is opened, more air comes into contact with the oil, altering its components and reducing its shelf life.

Lemon oil may cause irritation on highly sensitive skin; it’s recommended you first do a skin patch test before adding it into your weight loss blend.

5. GINGER

Ginger oil helps you curb sugar cravings

Ginger essential oil (Zingiber officinale), also known as Ginger Root, is a natural appetite suppressant. It helps you curb sugar cravings and reduce feelings of the “munchies”.

One of the most effective ways to lose weight is to eat less. Ginger oil also strengthens and stimulates digestion, which aids in the absorption of vitamins and minerals from the foods you do consume.

Ginger has a warm, spicy, woody yet still lightly lemon-y scent. It works amazing together with Lemon!

Weight loss promoting belly rub recipe with essential oils

One of the easiest ways to enjoy the benefits of essential oils is through massage. Rub the oils into your tummy.

The recipe is simple:

  • 15 ml (~1 tablespoon) of carrier oil such as Jojoba or Sweet Almond oil
  • 3 drops Grapefruit essential oil
  • 2 drops Lemon essential oil
  • 1 drop Ginger essential oil
  • 2 drops Fennel essential oil
  • 1 drop Juniper berry essential oil

This will give you a dilution rate of 2.5 – 3%, which is regarded as safe for the general adult population. If you are elderly, you’ll want to stay closer to a 1% dilution rate, which would be more like 3-4 drops to the 15 ml of carrier oil.

I recommend to not only use a single oil, but use 3-5 oils in a blend. This follows the principle of “the sum is greater than its parts”. Essential oils complement each other and have benefit-stacking effects when added together. Blending the right set of essential oils, for the right person, is at the heart of the practice of holistic aromatherapy.

If you don’t have all of these oils at home, you may substitute. For grapefruit: substitute with fennel, juniper berry, or black pepper. If you don’t have lemon: use lemongrass, citronella, lemon verbena, or melissa. Should ginger be missing: use peppermint, chamomile, spearmint, or mandarin. Fennel and juniper berry substitute each other, so you will need one of the two for an effective weight loss blend.
