A common viral infection is cold sores, also called fever blisters. They are tiny blisters on and around your lips that are fluid-filled. In patches, these blisters are always grouped together. A scab forms after the blisters crack, which can last many days. Without leaving a scar, cold sores usually heal in two to three weeks.

Cold sores transmit by physical contact, such as hugging, from person to person. They are typically caused by type 1 herpes simplex virus (HSV-1) and less often by type 2 herpes simplex virus (HSV-1) (HSV-2). The mouth or genitals may be infected by any of these viruses which can be transmitted by oral sex. Cold sores are infectious, even though the sores are not noticeable to you.
