The painful inflammation of small blood vessels in the skin that occurs in response to prolonged exposure to cold, but not freezing, air is Chilblains (CHILL-blayns). Chilblains, also known as pernio, can cause scratching on your hands and feet, red spots, swelling and blistering.

In order to alleviate the symptoms, care requires covering yourself from the cold and using lotions. Chilblains normally do not cause permanent damage.
