Angelica root (archangelica) – plant family: Apiaceae/Umbelliferae

Type of plant: Angelica root is a tall herb with large flower heads carrying clusters of small, balllike, green-white flowers

Method of extraction: Steam distillation

Notes: Not to be confused with angelica seed oil

Principal places of production: Belgium, France, China, Spain, Russia, Egypt, India, Hungary, Holland, Germany

When buying look for: From colorless through pale yellow, darkening to light amber with age, with a musky, spicy, rooty aroma

Therapeutic properties: Anti-infectious, antispasmodic, antitussive, diuretic, mucolytic, stomachic

Therapeutic uses: Coughs, sinus infection, viral infection, rheumatism, arthritis, gout, physical fatigue, stress-related conditions; fortifying and strengthening

Blends well with: Black pepper, cajuput, cardamom, cedarwood, chamomile german, cypress, elemi, geranium, ginger, grapefruit, juniper berry, lemon, manuka, marjoram (sweet), niaouli, orange (sweet), palmarosa, ravensara, rosalina, tea tree, turmeric, vetiver, yarrow

Precautionary advice: Has photosensitization potential; avoid sunlight exposure after application. Best avoided during pregnancy and while breastfeeding. GRAS status.
